You are going on a dig. You have ten pennies to buy two of the paleontologist’s tools to take with you. Look at your site (an outside sandbox). What tools do you think will be best to use? Choose carefully, because once your ten pennies are gone you cannot buy anything more. (Economic literacy)
Follow the steps of a paleontologist:
- Draw your dig site
- Use your tools to locate, and carefully uncover a ‘dinosaur bone’ (collection of chicken, deer and horse bones)
- Draw your bone, where it is, before you remove it. Remember, paleontologists record as much information as possible in case they need it later.
- Use the iPad to photograph the site
- Carefully remove, and wrap for transportation (back to class) (Note: This activity uses all but Musical/Rhythmic and Intrapersonal intelligences)
Using the dinosaur bones from the Burke Box:
- Make a copy of one of the dinosaur bones using modeling clay. (Bodily-Kinesthetic)
- Trace around the dinosaur toe bone. Trace around your big toe. Which is bigger? Why? (Visual-Spatial; Bodily-Kinesthetic)
- Play Scholastic “Dig” on the computer. (Logical-Mathematical)
- Take a rubbing of the dinosaur skin. Where do you see skin like that today? (Visual-Spatial; Naturalistic)
All findings presented to the class.
