DINOSAURS LIVED A LONG TIME AGO

All scientists ask questions and perform research to answer the questions they ask. Scientists also use special words in their research. You just learned about the words Triassic, Jurassic and Cretaceous. You are going to study a dinosaur from one of those periods. With your 5th Grade Buddy choose either a meat eating or plant eating dinosaur to learn about. Once you have chosen the dinosaur you want to learn more about click on your dinosaur picture and answer the questions there.
What is Paleontology?
Paleontology is using fossils to study ancient animals. Paleontologists are scientists who dig up fossils to study ancient animals. Let’s learn a little more by going to the site:
TOOLS OF THE TRADE
Scientists use tools to help them in their studies. Sometimes they are very special tools, and sometimes they are tools we know, but are used in a new way.
Look at this picture of tools. They are tools Paleontologists use when on a dig. Work with a partner and look carefully at this picture to answer these questions:
- What do you see?
- What do you think it was used for?
- Have you ever seen that tool before? Where?
- What was it used for?
Ask yourselves these questions with another tool you notice. In five minutes we will share our thoughts, and make a list of the possible ways we can use paleontologist’s tools. Then we will test them out.
